Subject and Object

According to unification teaching the relationship of subject and object is fundamental to all existence. Chapter 1 of the Principle, ‘Principle of Creation’ expands on it.

Subject-Object relationships are found on all levels of existence – from sub-atomic to cosmic. On a sub-atomic level, for example, The Principle sees the proton as the subject of the electron. Further up it sees male animals as the subjects of their female counterparts. In the human society men are seen as the subject and women as the object, basically.

An observation of the Principle concerning subject/object is that the subject initiates and the object responds. On the higher levels the borderline between subject and object become less and less obvious. Especially in the human realm anybody can be initiator and anybody can be in the responsive position. Thus the division “man = subject” and “woman = object” is more a starting point rather than an iron rule that governs the relationship. This is not to say that some of the weaker members of the male sex may misuse the concept to bolster their position - a widespread misuse of position.

A harmonious relationship between the subject and the object, focused on a common goal, is seen as the basis of all existence and development. A good relationship maintains a desirable situation or brings about new development. The breakdown of this relationship entails suffering and destruction.

It is important to note that the submission of the object towards  the subject should ultimately be voluntary and heartfelt. Coercing the object into submission is not an option. At least it shouldn’t be, because the result is not sustainable. It results in deeper conflict.

Until here there is nothing really new in this.

The Principle usually depicts the subject-object relationships using three circles:

The circle on the top is mostly labeled ‘God’. But depending on the context it could just as well mean ‘purpose’, ‘goal’ or something else.
